Jack O’Lantern Breakdown

Played on an 1896 Bay State banjo made in Boston, Massachusetts.

This piece appeared in “Turner’s 60 Breakdowns Jigs & Hornpipes Arranged as Solos for the Banjo with 2nd Banjo Accompaniment Ad Lib” by Herbert J. Ellis, circa 1900. Some fun little tunes in this book.

What Is This?

Long before jazz, old-time, or bluegrass, the banjo was associated with very different musical styles, now largely forgotten.

The music on this site is taken from (or inspired by) period sources from the 1800s through the early 1900s.
