Kentucky Juba

From Frank Converse’s “The Banjo and How To Play It”, 1872. A exercise blending early stroke, or “Banjo Style” and Guitar Style playing. While measures 2, 4, 6, and 8 are good timing exercises as written, I much prefer them played with straight eight notes; it makes it much statlier.

What Is This?

Long before jazz, old-time, or bluegrass, the banjo was associated with very different musical styles, now largely forgotten.

The music on this site is taken from (or inspired by) period sources from the 1800s through the early 1900s.
